老神温泉大蛇まつり

Last updated: April 23, 2021

Celebrate the legend of Oigami Onsen

According to local legend, the deity of Mt. Akagi created Oigami Onsen, a small hot spring town along Katashina Gorge, while in the form of a snake. In celebration of this story, 30-meter snake shrine is carried throughout the streets as part of a colorful parade.

Once every 12 years, during the Chinese year of the snake, a 108-meter long snake-shaped portable shrine weighing two tons is carried, instead.
