Canoe across one of Japan's most transparent lakes
Venture into the forests of Katashina in Nikko National Park to find Lake Sugenuma, which sits at an altitude of 1,731 meters. The lake is one of the most transparent in Japan and appears emerald green, indigo, or blue depending on the water's depth and the surface reflections.
Visit in summer to see the colors pop against the fresh green of the surrounding forests or autumn when the foliage creates a kaleidoscope of color. You can rent a canoe to explore the lake and, if you want to make your visit longer, stay at a campsite that operates during the warmer months.
