A strikingly blue lake lined with dense forest
Lake Shima is located 8 kilometers from Shima Onsen. It is known for its cobalt blue water, a shade known locally as "Shima Blue." The color, which results from the transparency of Shima River, is particularly intense in spring when snowmelt from nearby mountains feeds into the river.
This artificial lake is a popular location for canoe tours. The surrounding forests are a striking backdrop to your canoeing adventure. In spring and summer, the greenery makes the blue of the lake pop. It is also one of Shima's best spots to see the spectrum of colors when the leaves turn in autumn.
Look out for monkeys, boars, and tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog) that inhabit this nature-rich area.
