Riverside onsen with views and sweet treats
Isobe Onsen is a quiet onsen town set on the Usui River. Stroll its banks with views of Mt. Myogi in the distance. As you walk, try Isobe senbei, subtly sweet crackers made by adding mineral spring water and sugar to flour. As they bake, the crackers rise naturally from the carbon dioxide in the mineral water, creating a light, crispy texture.
Isobe Onsen has long been a popular retreat for writers and artists. It is the first onsen in the country to use the now-ubiquitous onsen map symbol, first occurring on a sign in the 1600s.
