Modern sculpture set on picturesque grounds
The Gunma Museum of Art, Tatebayashi, displays modern and contemporary art with a particular emphasis on sculpture. The museum has many pieces by French sculptor Francois Pompon, and even has a recreation of his studio.
It has also featured the work of international artists such as Jim Dine, Karl Blossfeldt, and Marc Chagall, as well as Japanese artists including Yasuda Chie, Iba Yasuko, and Nagai Kazumasa. Please check the exhibit for details of the current collections before you visit.
The main building is a striking contemporary design by Takahashi Teiichi, opened in 2001. It is set in a spacious park with a forested sculpture trail and well-manicured lawns.
