An exquisite traditional garden next to a cave filled with Buddhist treasures
This picturesque traditional Japanese garden is located next to the Doukutsu Kannon pilgrimage site, which is filled with priceless Buddhist artifacts. Both are the work of Yamada Tokuzo (1885–1964), an influential kimono merchant and cultural leader who used his considerable resources to share his spiritual beliefs while promoting tourism to the town of Takasaki. The 20,000-square-meter garden features trees, flowers, stones, and other natural features that create a colorful tableau that changes with the seasons. Doukutsu Kannon features 39 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist deity of mercy, set against the sublime backdrop of a 450-meter-deep cave.
