Catch your own lunch
When Lake Onuma on Mt. Akagi freezes over, ice fishing for wakasagi, or Japanese pond smelt, becomes a popular pastime. These small, silvery fish, about the size of sardines, are delicious when deep-fried.
You can rent all the equipment you need on the lakeshore, including fishing gear, a drill to make a hole in the ice, and a tent to keep you warm. Take your catch back to the rental shop, and they will fry up your fish free of charge.
