How to Get to Oze

Oze is home to the Oze National Park, where you can access beautiful hiking routes around Ozegahara Marsh and Ozenuma Pond. Access the area by train and bus from Tokyo.

Oze is accessible by train and bus in around 3 hours and 35 minutes from Tokyo via Jomo-Kogen Station. From Jomo-Kogen, take a bus to Numata Station, where you can transfer to buses bound for Oze Tokura, then a shuttle to the trailhead at Hatomachitoge Pass.

Tokyo Station

You can board Hokuriku and Joetsu shinkansen services at Tokyo Station.

Joetsu Shinkansen

Joetsu Shinkansen trains from Tokyo Station reach Jomo-Kogen Station in around 70 minutes. The train fare is covered by various Japan Rail Passes.

This station in the Minakami area is a stop on the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo and is a gateway to northwestern Gunma. Buses stop in front of the east exit of the station. There is a tourist information center near the east exit. Buses for Numata Station and Oze Tokura depart from Bus Stop No.2 in front of the station.

Although a few bus services to Oze Tokura start from Jomo-Kogen Station, most depart from Numata Station. Take a Sarugakyo Line bus (Kan-etsu Transportation) to Numata Station. The trip takes about 25 minutes.

There are several restaurants and cafes in front of the station, and bus stops for destinations in northern Gunma. Buses for Oze Tokura depart from Bus Stop No.1 in front of the station. The station is also accessible by train from Takasaki Station and Minakami Station.

Bus to Oze Tokura

Take a Kamata Line bus (Kan-etsu Transportation) to Oze Tokura. The trip takes around 80 minutes. Timetables for the bus services may differ between summer and winter. You can pay the fare in cash or with a transportation IC card as you exit the bus.

The small town of Tokura on the Katashina River has convenient access to the nearby Snow Park Oze Tokura in the winter, and to the Hatomachitoge Pass trailhead between April and November. During this period, you can transfer at Oze Tokura to a bus or shared taxi (minibus) service to the trailhead. The journey takes around 35 minutes. The roads are closed in winter, so hiking in Oze is limited to the warmer months between spring and autumn.

Goal: Hatomachitoge Pass

A parking area and rest stop are near the trailhead to Oze. Visitors can relax and buy snacks before walking through a primeval beech forest to Ozegahara Marsh and Ozenuma Pond. There are rest areas and restrooms along the way.

During peak hiking season from May to October, there are direct highway bus services from Shinjuku to Oze Tokura. Take an Expressway bus (Kan-etsu Transportation) from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal (Busta Shinjuku) to Oze Tokura. The trip takes around 4 hours and 40 minutes.

Directly connected to Shinjuku Station, Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal (Busta Shinjuku) is a convenient hub for buses to a range of destinations. There are ticket offices and machines, waiting areas, and shops.

Oze Tokura
